Animate That!

Animate That! is a series of creative stop-motion animation workshops designed to foster collaborative artistic endeavors amongst children and adults from a variety of backgrounds and interests.

There are several established goals for Animate That! including:

  • Critical arts education
  • Creative achievement through practice
  • Collaborative creativity (animation, storytelling, music)
  • Discovering new creative outlets
  • Patience and persistence in production
  • Inclusive community participation

The intended audience for Animate That! is individuals and families of all ages, either as producers or consumers of animated movies.  The primary “producers” audience for the animation workshops is children aged 10 and up, teenagers, and adults.

Anyone with an interest in creative activities can likely find something he or she enjoys about stop-motion animation production.  Families are encouraged to participate as collaborative groups.

Animate That! Involves a range of activities, including half-day introductory workshops, three day advanced workshops, a screening, and a pitch competition (for a short feature production which follows the workshops).

You can browse and register for all of these events on our Eventbrite page.

Introductory Workshops

As part of its 2018 Animate That! project, The Wolfbird is hosting several public introductory animation workshops at the Blue Ridge Business Development Center in Sparta, North Carolina.

During these half-day (three hour) introductory workshops, participants will create short stop-motion animations (10-15 seconds long) using iPods or similar smartphone devices.

Each introductory workshop is limited to a maximum of ten participants.  We welcome individuals aged 13 years and older, and families with children in first grade or higher.

These workshops are offered free of charge.

We are using Eventbrite to manage registration for all Animate That! events.  Stay tuned as we make event registration available for these introductory workshops.

The final versions of these short animated movies will be narrated in English and Spanish by students and community members.

Music for these movies can be composed and recorded in The Wolfbird studios by local musicians.

These three day workshops cost $15 per participant to cover materials and studio equipment usage.

Pitch Competition

During the completion of the introductory and advanced workshops for its 2018 Animate That! project, The Wolfbird will host a pitch competition, in which members of the community will “pitch” story ideas for a five minute stop-motion animated short feature highlighting the culture and communities of Alleghany County.

This short feature will be produced in 2018 and 2019 at The Wolfbird with a crew of interested community members (including any workshop alumni who want to participate).  The resulting animated short feature will be entered into several film festivals as a collaborative artistic expression of the Alleghany community.

Each pitch submitted will require a $10 entry fee for the competition, with a limit of three pitches per person.

Monday, April 9 — The competition launches and we’ll begin accepting submissions online

Friday, May 4 — The competition submission deadline (11:59pm ET)
